Our Story
Carlo Toews,
Owner, Trainer, Clinician
Fascinated by horses from a young age, Carlo's first memory of equines came when he was four years old when his father lifted him onto the neighbor's mule. That moment was all it took. He was hooked. From then on, Carlo dreamed of a life working with horses. In 2004, he took one of his first steps toward that dream by enrolling in Oklahoma Horseshoeing School, launching his career as a farrier.
While working on horses’ hooves, Carlo discovered his natural gift for understanding timing and the subtle cues of when a horse might move—or was about to. During this time, fortune smiled upon him as he built lasting relationships with two key mentors: Owen Bexson, a seasoned cowboy and teamster, and Jerry Tindell, a skilled trainer and clinician. Both men became pillars in Carlo's horsemanship journey, always available for guidance.
Now, after 20 years of relentless practice and learning, Carlo continues to strive for a deeper connection with horses and mules, constantly working toward his dream of a perfectly soft and responsive bridle mule. His talent for breaking down the dynamics of horsemanship into easily understandable descriptions has made him a sot after clinician.
It was from this journey that The Leaning Ladder was born.
Wanting a name that would stand out, Carlo chose The Leaning Ladder brand, inspired by a historical brand registry entry, last registered in 1911. The name symbolizes the constant leaning toward growth and learning, like the ladder itself.
Jen Toews,
Owner, Manager
Jen has a certificate in Veterinary Medical Assistance from Lakeland College and has gained experience working at several veterinary clinics in Northern Alberta, with a focus on Emerson Trail Veterinary Services. Her love for horses has always been a significant part of her life, and as a young adult, she purchased her first horse, a red Appaloosa with some unique quirks. After a friend introduced her to her now-husband, Carlo, Jen was able to fully immerse herself in the equine world she had always dreamed of.
In 2015, Jen earned her certification in Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) through Equine Connection in Strathmore, AB. With a solid background as a professional Skate Canada coach, she found it natural to transfer her coaching skills into the equine world. Jen began offering horsemanship and riding lessons alongside EAL programs designed to promote integrity, safety, self-development, and common sense. Through these programs, she was able to build lasting relationships with clients, both young and adult.
Jen is deeply passionate about all aspects of the equine world and enjoys partnering with her husband, Carlo, to provide wholesome learning opportunities for equine enthusiasts of all ages.
